HSBC advises mortgage holders to save for second purchase

Many first-time buyers will be trapped in their property and unable to move on without saving or overpaying their mortgage, according to HSBC.

New research from the bank shows the house price slump has eroded the equity in a large number of properties owned by first-time buyers, making it near-impossible for them to move up the ladder.

Buyers can no longer rely on a rise in market value to provide the deposit required for their second purchase, as first-time buyer house prices have fallen by seven per cent on average since 2007.

"These findings highlight the need to save or pay down an existing mortgage in order to fund that second step on the property ladder," said Pete Dockar, head of mortgages at HSBC.

He added that making overpayments on the mortgage "is one way that these movers can help build up their finances to take the next step".

According to the research, the average first-time buyer home value in Northern Ireland has dropped by 42 per cent over the last four years.

Savills recently predicted that UK house prices will fall 11 per cent in "real" terms by 2016.
