Clerical Medical: Brits positive about retirement

Over three quarters of Brits are positive about retirement and one in three aspire to retire abroad, according to latest research by leading pensions and investment provider Clerical Medical.

Figures show that of those who want to move abroad, almost half said they would move to Spain or elsewhere in Europe, nine per cent would go to Australia and six per cent to the US.

The study shows that 77 per cent have a positive approach towards retirement and there appeared to be a generational shift towards retirement aspirations to travel and work.

Half of respondents said their parents or grandparents travelled in retirement but 81 per cent planned to travel domestically and 77 per cent internationally when they retire themselves.

Clerical Medical spokesman Paul Shelley said "The future retiree has great aspirations for travel, career hobbies and buying new cars – one in six see themselves driving a sports car - but they're realistic about having to work longer to fund their aspirations.

"Clearly the messages around the need to plan for a comfortable future are being heard by a lot of people. It's encouraging to see that future retirees have aspirational plans."
