Using a mortgage intermediary 'could save money'

Seeking independent mortgage advice rather than dealing with lenders directly could save borrowers £1,830 a year, according to a report from financial services research company NMG.

It revealed that the average annual saving made by purchasing through an advisor is £962.

NMG also measured customers satisfaction and found that of the people who arranged their current mortgage through an advisor, 55 per cent felt that they were kept informed on the progress of the mortgage application, compared to 34 per cent who went directly to a lender.

Chris Cummings, director general of the Association of Mortgage Lenders, said: "Intermediaries are able to identify the most suitable product for the consumer at a competitive price."

He also called on the government and industry to "give their backing to the role of advice in the mortgage market at these difficult times for consumers".

Last week the Council of Mortgage Lenders reported that increasing numbers of first-time buyers are turning to intermediaries to secure a mortgage.
