Zurich warns festivalgoers to get insurance

Nearly a million music festivalgoers have had their possessions stolen - but 75 per cent take out no insurance, Zurich has warned.

Research by the financial services provider found that the average value of personal items people take to festivals is over £260, including items such as mobile phones, MP3 players and cameras.

The fraction of those who have had belongings stolen during a festival is one in ten.

Mike Quinton, managing director for Direct & Partnerships at Zurich, said that music lovers were leaving expensive objects in tents and failing to protect against theft.

He urged festivalgoers to check their insurance cover beforehand.

Zurich offered a list of tips for festival-goers, including taking cheap objects rather than expensive ones and using the security lock-ups for passports and valuables.

Finance advice website Fool.co.uk advises Glastonbury festivalgoers to take only as much cash as they need, make smaller and more frequent withdrawals from the on-site cashpoints, keep cash and cards separate and remove old receipts and unnecessary cards from their wallets.

It also warns music lovers with home contents insurance to inform their insurers that they will be going to see whether they will be covered.
