Lib Dems vote against council tax

Party members have voted overwhelmingly to seek to scrap council tax at the Liberal Democrat spring conference in Southport.

The Liberal Democrats plan to replace council tax with a local income tax which will counter the "unfairness" of the current system.

Party leader Charles Kennedy, who missed the Budget statement earlier this week due to a stomach bug, said the Lib Dems would fight the coming elections on a platform to introduce a "fairer" local income tax.

He said: "I think that's going to win a lot of votes come these elections".

The party released research which suggested that some of the poorest people are paying out up to £453 per year too much. It also revealed that council tax has risen faster than any other household bill since Labour came to power in 1997.

Local government spokesman Ed Davey told the delegates in Southport: "Council tax is unfair - you know it's unfair and I know it's unfair. We want it scrapped, not capped and we are winning that argument.

"The fairest alternative to council tax is local income tax, based on the ability to pay."
