People have "lost faith in pensions"

People have "lost faith in pensions" and part of the problem is the way advisors talk about products around at the moment, according to an industry commentator.

Dr Ros Altmann, an independent pensions expert, highlighted the bad press that defined contribution schemes have received recently in comparison to final-salary schemes.

In her view, it is because people are getting these negative comments about current schemes that they are seeing them as in some way inferior.

"People have lost faith in all kinds of pensions, but particularly defined contribution pensions, where so many people have had a bad experience," said Dr Altmann.

She added that it could be a good idea to introduce a National Association of Pension Funds Pension Quality Mark, so that people can have more confidence in the schemes currently available.

Her comments follow the news that Marks & Spencer and Kellogg's are among the first companies to be given the Pension Quality Mark by the organisation, this week.
