Property and mortgage information becomes available to all

From today people can find out the details of their neighbours' houses with a new online service.

For £2 members of the public can now browse the Land Registry's database, and discover who owns a property, their mortgage lender, the price of the house (if registered since 1st April 2000) as well as any rights of way or other rights affecting the house.

To access the information users need little more than the property's address and a valid credit/debit card.

The Land Registry holds data on more than 19 million properties in England and Wales.

The idea behind taking the service online is to speed up the home buying process and make it more transparent. It is also part of a wider Government process to offer more services online.

Land Registry chief executive Peter Collis commented: "The Land Register is a public database and as part of Land Registry's strategy we are committed to ensuring that it is accessible to everyone.

"Land Register Online will improve the transparency of buying or selling property and land in England and Wales; it is an integral part of Land Registry's aim to make property transactions easier for all."

The Land Registry believes the service will be useful for people who want to look at the register and/or title plan of their own property, to find out who owns a specific property or plot, to discover the extent of a property, and contacting a landlord of a leasehold or rental property.

The full online service follows a successful pilot scheme in which a total of 560,000 searches were made by members of the public online.

The Land Registry's website can be found at www.landregisteronline.gov.uk
