Brits 'must take charge of their finances'

Individuals and families across the UK have to grasp the nettle and take charge of their finances, it has been argued.

Martin Bamford, managing director and chartered financial Planner at Informed Choice, said in many instances, being unaware of financial problems is a form of voluntary ignorance which people inflict upon themselves in order to shy away from the truth about their problems.

He commented: "It is quite a scary prospect especially when you're that worried about money to tear off the sticky plaster and get on with it."

Mr Bamford added, however, that taking control of the situation is the only way to bring finances back into line and it provides peace of mind at the same time.

According to Michelle Highman, chief executive officer of Credit Action, people should consider budgeting as a core skill to ensure they can effectively plan for their retirement and to make sure they are not falling into debt and have enough money to live on each month.
