Halifax reveals 'forgotten' savings

Many people have money held in savings accounts that they have forgotten about, an expert has said.

Although the majority of forgotten accounts contain less than £100, people should provide the right details to ensure that they get the money back, commented Jason Clarke, spokesperson for Halifax.

Many people lose track of their money when they move house and forget to inform their bank of a change of address, the Halifax spokesperson noted.

People opening an account for specific purposes, such as a possible holiday, are most prone to forget about their savings, Mr Clarke noted.

"If somebody's got money and they've forgotten about it, then it's right that they should ensure that the bank knows that they've got the right details and that it's their money," he added.

Some £6 million has been returned to consumers after Halifax launched a campaign via its website in February to help customers rediscover any lost savings.
