Abbey: Football failure offers financial savings

Although football fans may be disappointed that no British team qualified for the Euro 2008 football tournament, Abbey has found that they may have saved up to £557 by missing out on the festivities.

According to its research, 1.8 million Brits had considered purchasing a new television in to watch the games, while 2.29 million reported that they would have spent around £147 on football paraphernalia and kit for the family.

As far as celebrating goes, 8.26 million people estimated that they would have spent £98 on alcohol for the tournament, while 5.04 million would have been happy to spend £135 watching the tournament in the pub.

Steve Shore, head of Abbey Banking, commented: "Supporters may be disappointed at their team's absence but fans need only look at their June bank balance for some comfort as we all look set to make significant savings."

Last month, Sainsbury's Finance estimated that football fans on a two-day visit to Moscow for the UEFA Champions League final would spend an average of £624 each.
