Halifax: Brits agreeing to cap spending this Christmas

Halifax has released a survey which shows that many Brits are agreeing to put a limit on the amount they will spend on presents for each other this Christmas.

As the recession bites, Halifax found that two-thirds of Brits who have agreed to cap their spending will be paying less than £25 per present for their loved ones.

People in the 16-24 age group impose the highest cap upon themselves, £51.46 per present on average, while the lowest average cap is amongst 35-44 year olds at £25.15.

Mike Regnier, Halifax head of banking, said: "For many, a sensible spending cap is a great way to cut the cost of Christmas and still manage to buy presents for all our family and friends."

Halifax Credit Cards conducted a survey earlier this month which revealed that the high street prices of many popular present items such as toys and CDs had fallen on average.
