British consumers resolve to save in the new year

A new survey of intended new year's resolutions has revealed that over half of Britons are likely to try and save more in the new year.

The study, conducted by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has found that 51 per cent of respondents said the current economic climate made it more likely that they would resolve to save more.

Meanwhile 47 per cent said they had already made a new year’s resolution to try and put more money aside.

Stephen Haddrill, the ABI's director general, said: "It's good news that even in this difficult economic climate, public attitudes are shifting towards saving.

"This is not before time, as ABI research shows that around half of the working population aren't saving enough for their retirement."

Recently the government introduced the Savings Gateway scheme, which encourages those on the lowest incomes and even those on benefits to develop a savings habit.
