The Nottingham: East Midlanders maintain their honesty

The Nottingham has conducted a poll which has served to highlight the financial honesty of many people in the East Midlands.

It asked its customers what they would do if they found £500 on the street. 51 per cent of people claimed that their conscience would get the better of them and they'd hand the money over to the police, despite the fact that many find themselves strapped for cash because of the credit crunch.

The Nottingham also found that 12 per cent of those who said they would keep the money would put it in a savings account and allow it to accumulate interest.

Clare Roberts, who works for the building society, said: "Most of us secretly wish we would find some money in the street.

"But it's pleasing to know that if that were to happen, more than one-in-two people would do the right thing and hand it over to the appropriate authorities."

The Nottingham was founded in 1849.
