Citizens Advice Bureau 'sees surge in demand for advice'

Within the last year, the Citizens Advice Bureau has experienced a significant surge in the number of people seeking advice on issues such as finance.

New figures released by the organisation reveal that it advised on six million more problems from April 2008 to March 2009 compared to the previous year - the equivalent of a nine per cent increase.

The bureau advised a further 1.93 million people on debt during the timeframe, while enquiries related to redundancy also increased by 114 per cent. A greater demand for jobseekers allowance advice was also noted, with a 61 per cent increase on 2007.

David Harker, chief executive of the Citizens Advice Bureau said that although the organisation is receiving more funding to help larger volumes of people, it is essential that lenders and creditors act responsibly too.

He added that they should "treat people in arrears fairly and sympathetically, negotiate with borrowers in trouble and do everything they can to help ease their debt problems and avoid adding to them."

This week, HSBC was named responsible lender of the year by the commercial and consumer magazine Credit Today.
