Over one-quarter of Brits 'do not get the broadband speed they expect'

More than one-quarter of British broadband subscribers do not receive the internet speeds they signed up for, it has been discovered.

According to research carried out jointly by Ofcom, technical partner SamKnows and market research agency GfK, the average broadband speed in the UK in April stood at 4.1 Megabits per second (Mbps).

However, the average maximum speed offered by service providers in the country at the same time was found to be 7.1 Mbps.

It was also discovered that those from rural areas receive average speeds of 3.3 Mbps, whereas subscribers living in urban regions were found to have average speeds of 4.6 Mbps.

Service providers claiming to offer speeds of up to eight Mbps were also examined and it was found that AOL's average speed for those on this package is between 3.3 and 3.9 Mbps, while through BT this figure stood between 3.8 to 4.2 Mbps.

Independent regulator Ofcom deals with the UK communications industry, including TV, radio and telecommunications.
