EU mobile phone roaming cut-off introduced

Mobile phone users will be saved from unexpectedly high bills thanks to a new EU ruling which limits roaming charges to €50 (£44.50).

Taking effect on March 1st, the cut-off will help holidaymakers avoid racking up unfair bills for using their mobile phones abroad, particularly as pricing for the service is often confusing, according to moneysupermarket.com.

The price comparison website advised consumers to speak with the mobile phone network provider to negotiate the usage they will receive under the new limit, which can be altered if customers specify a new limit.

Mike Wilson, mobiles manager at moneysupermarket.com, said: "A cap should wipe out the cases where people are stung with clearly unreasonable bills, sometimes reaching thousands of pounds, for using their mobile internet abroad."

The site recently reported that telecommunications firm Orange are currently offering a two-megabyte mobile broadband roaming offer of €2, which will be enough to check Twitter, email accounts and do some other browsing abroad.
