Research by the organisation revealed that 46 per cent of people who claim to have encountered a distraction burglar - someone who diverts the attention of a householder while an accomplice steals from the property - did not tell the authorities afterwards.
Ben Tyte, manager of Sainsbury's Home Insurance, said the figures were a "worry" and urged victims to come forwards.
He claimed that this type of crime "can have a very damaging psychological effect" on targeted individuals and explained that they "could invalidate their home insurance policies if they fail to report" it.
Home insurance is not only important to protect against theft. In February, following the winter cold snap, Mr Tyte said good quality cover is "invaluable" to guard against the costs caused by water damage.
