Recession 'has been good for youngsters'

There has been an upside to the recession, according to one finance expert, which is that young people have a better appreciation of the value of money.

Jasmine Birtles, founder of Moneymagpie.com, suggested youngsters currently realise they cannot have everything in a designer brand.

She remarked: "In one sense I think it means that kids are feeling a bit pressured, but, on the other hand at least it's made [them] a lot of them more realistic about money."

In her view, the recession may have taught children that they might have to save up their money if they really want to buy something and that cash does not grow on trees.

Ms Birtles concluded this difficult economic climate "has been quite good for them in a sense".

These comments follow a study by Santander that showed about 18 per cent of children between ten and 15 years old are responsible for generating just under half a billion pounds a year through different forms of work.
