Post Office notes popularity of shared fixed rate mortgages

Mortgages shared between friends or family members are seeing an increase in popularity, according to the Post Office.

Head of mortgages at the company Mike Cook explained that the difficulty in securing home finance deals has prompted people to consider alternative methods of borrowing money.

He pointed out that up to four individuals can be listed on a mortgage, so a shared arrangement is a possibility for some people.

"Choosing the right mortgage for your situation, regardless of who you are buying with, will help first-time buyers take this step together more easily," Mr Cook remarked.

The Post Office representative stressed that signing up for a home finance proposition is a "big commitment" and not a decision that should be taken lightly.

Research published by LSL Property Services last week showed that rents fell for the first time since January 2010 in December, slipping by 1.2 per cent to an average level of £684 per month.
