It is important for people to get regular advice on their long-term savings strategies, according to a source from NFU Mutual.

Jane Mulford, pensions specialist at the company, explained that a professional adviser will be able to review the performance and ambition of retirement options.

Her comments were made after an NFU Mutual study showed 70 per cent of adults are not sure at what level they would like their pension income to be.

"The confusion around pensions and retirement highlighted in this survey demonstrates the need for people to talk to an adviser about their retirement plans and current provision," said Ms Mulford.

According to the report, 25 per cent of 55 to 64-year-olds do not know how much money the state pension gives retirees.

There could be new changes to the retirement savings system in the works, after the Pension Protection Fund announced it intends to alter its valuation assumptions in response to recent developments in the sector.
