NFU Mutual: Check car insurance before driving abroad

Rural insurance provider NFU Mutual has offered advice on car insurance when driving overseas.

Spokesperson Laura Wood warned that insurance policies often limit the number of days of cover for customers driving abroad and urged motorists to check whether they are covered for accident or theft.

The insurer also noted that some countries require drivers to carry a fluorescent jacket and warning triangle in their vehicles at all times.

Motorists should also ensure their cars are well maintained and should check that fluids are topped up, bulbs are working and the headlamp beam is converted, tyres are in good condition and at the right pressure and that all paperwork is up-to-date.

Ms Wood added that NFU Mutual's standard car policy automatically insures policyholders driving in Europe for 365 days a year.

Hastings Direct has been fined £735,000 by the Financial Services Authority after thousands of its customers were left uninsured after a pricing error, the Telegraph reports.

The motor insurer cancelled 4,550 policies when it realised they were underpriced.
