US commander attacked in Iraq

General John Abizaid, commander of the US forces in the Middle East, has reportedly escaped injury after his convoy came under fire in Iraq.

The attack took place at the Iraqi Civil Defence Corps in Fallujah, a town west of the capital Baghdad.

According to the Associated Press, neither General Abizaid nor any members of his party were hurt.

A gun battle lasted around six minutes involving small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. It is as yet unclear if any of the attackers were injured, AP said.

After returning to a nearby US base, the general was quoted by AP as saying: "This is an area where there are plenty of former regime elements out there willing to fight."
