Halifax Home Insurance warns of property subsidence 'threat'

Homeowners should take every opportunity to ensure that their properties are protected from the possibility of subsidence.

According to Halifax Home Insurance, subsidence can cause major damage to homes, but paying attention to the growth of trees and vegetation around a property can be crucial for avoiding a subsidence threat.

"People do plant trees too close to houses and they bring about the majority of subsidence insurance claims that we face," said Neil Curling, spokesperson for Halifax Home Insurance.

However, Mr Curling also said that homeowners needed to make sure they choose an insurance package which covers against subsidence.

"Don't forget though that there will usually be a £1000 policy excess to pay on subsidence, plus the inconvenience of the damage done to a house," he added.

The Halifax is also the UK's largest provider of residential mortgages and savings accounts.
