Halifax: Northern Ireland houses show best growth

House prices in Northern Ireland are the fastest growing in the UK, according to Halifax.

In its House Price Index for the second quarter of 2007, Halifax identified eight Northern Irish towns as the fastest growing in terms of UK house prices.

The largest increase was seen in Newtownards, where a year-on-year growth of 64 per cent was witnessed.

Prices in Newtownards in the second quarter hit an average of £228,310, compared to £139,610 during the same period last year.

Craigavon, Newtownabbey, Downpatrick, Carrickfergus, Belfast, Lisburn and Newry made up the rest of the top eight. Only Godalming and Slough featured in the top ten and were not in Northern Ireland.

Only London and the south-east now have higher average house prices than Northern Ireland.

According to online estate agent Rightmove, house prices grew by 10.3 per cent in June - compared to 13.2 per cent in the same month in 2006.
