Halifax: Brits moving to the seaside

Halifax has published research into the housing market which reveals that many Brits are moving away from the big cities in the UK and flocking to the coasts.

The mortgage providers' data showed that nine out of the ten of the local authorities that are experiencing the largest outflows of residents are in London.

Birmingham recorded the highest outflow of people, with 403,600 choosing to leave the midlands city between 1997 and 2007. At the same time, however, it recorded the highest influx of new residents, suggesting that many people do not choose to live in the city for long.

Martin Ellis, a Halifax economist, said: "Coastal areas have proved to be popular destinations for people to move to as many people have sought to take advantage of the benefits of living near the sea."

Recently, Halifax published a survey of landlords which showed that people from London make the most popular tenants.
