Moneymagpies.com representative offers debt relief suggestion

Consumers keen to pay down their debts have been offered a potential method by an expert from Moneymagpie.com.

Founder of the website Jasmine Birtles pointed out there may be some "nasty" utility and credit card bills arriving in January as a result of the cold weather and the Christmas spending season.

In her opinion, one way to build up some money to pay such invoices is to sell unwanted presents and she urged people to start doing this early, so that they have the money ready when the bills arrive.

"If [they] do [overspend at Christmas] the first thing that people should do, particularly in that boring bit between Christmas and new year, is to ... look at their finances," said Ms Birtles.

Her comments were made following the publication of the UK Household Finance Index, which indicated that people have taken on more debt and increased their spending compared with 2009.
