Saga makes pensions calculator recommendations

A series of recommendations have been offered by Saga on how to improve the pensions system in the UK.

One of the reforms suggested by the firm is to stop using the word 'pension' for anything other than state-provided retirement income.

"The fact is that pensions are just a special kind of long-term savings and if we manage to change their image, perhaps more people will be persuaded to save," a representative from the company observed.

Among the other changes to this area of policy called for by Saga are for individuals to be encouraged to work for longer, state pensions to deliver a decent social welfare minimum and more thought to be put into care needs for the elderly.

The group's director general Dr Ros Altmann previously predicted that promoting later retirement ages will help create jobs for young people, because older consumers will have more spending power.
