Saga extends travel insurance policy to cover holidays at home

Saga has announced changes to its travel insurance products to take account of the growing number of over-50s choosing to holiday at home.

The insurance specialist claimed that 76 per cent of over-50s now choose to include short trips and holidays as part of their overall yearly vacation plans.

However, with rail costs due to increase by as much as eight per cent in the coming year and average nightly hotel prices set at £83, according to the company, people could find competitively priced insurance policies increasingly useful.

"Many people mistakenly believe that travel insurance provides the same cover whether you're travelling in the UK or abroad, but it's important to check as this is not always the case," explained chief executive of Saga Services Roger Ramsden.

He added that many policies do not cover the added costs for partners staying with loved ones who are hospitalised while on holiday, but that Saga has included this as part of standard cover.

The Post Office recently claimed that the rising number of holidaymakers going abroad at younger ages meant that comprehensive travel insurance cover reflecting these changes has become increasingly vital.
