People not claiming for vandalism, says Direct Line

For fear of losing their no claims bonus and facing the prospect of paying higher premiums, people are failing to claim in the event of vandalism, said a spokesperson for Direct Line.

However, living in the five so-called vandalism hotspots of Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester, London and the Wirral does not generally affect a person's premiums by very much according to Emma Hoyler.

Ms Hoyler explained that on average, two out three people claimed for acts of vandalism on their insurance with the other third preferring to address the cost of the damage out of their own pocket.

When asked why she believed people are choosing not to claim on acts of vandalism, Ms Hoyler stated: "This is because the cost of the claim would come to around £150 for minor damage and that equals the cost of your excess anyway, so a lot of people instead of losing their no-claims bonus will just pay for the damage themselves."

Direct Line has its headquarters in Croydon, is a division of the Royal Bank of Scotland and when it was established in 1985, became the UK's first telephone insurer.
