Post Office: Ensure your car is maintained this winter

Cars need to be well maintained over the winter, as a poor state of repair can result in accidents in bad weather, according to the Post Office.

In a bid to save money this year, 48 per cent of drivers told the institution that they have cut corners when it comes to their car repairs.

The institution further estimates that 28 per cent have let the repairs of their vehicles slip so much they could be putting their own - and other drivers' safety - at risk.

Although motorists are advised to have their vehicle serviced once every 12 months, this year, 29 per cent of people say they have skipped their MOT in order to cut back on their spending, with this figure rising to 40 per cent among the under-30s.

Post Office head of car insurance, Richard Pennant-Jones, said: "While the recession is causing us all to watch our budgets more closely, car safety is one area where cutting corners could cost you more than you bargained for."

Those who hold their contents insurance with the Post Office are set for a boost this Christmas, with ten per cent extra cover on their possessions.
