Customers urged to appeal bank charges

Sending a bank a letter complaining about "unfair" bank charges or threatening court action will be enough for them to relent and pay back the money taken, says the director of penaltycharges.co.uk.

Stephen Hone has asserted that every individual who downloaded a form from his website and sent it to their bank appealing for their charges to be repaid was reimbursed.

His comments come amid a rally outside the Office of Fair Trading today, designed to spread awareness of what some see as "extortionate" charges put in place by banks. The rally was organised by iva.co.uk, penaltycharges.co.uk and the Consumer Action Group.

Advising people who find themselves hit with a bank charge, Mr Hone recommended: "What they have to do is log onto our site - penaltycharges.co.uk - and all the letters they need are there.

"They need to find the one for them, send it to their bank and request the money back. If the bank refuses to do it they need to file the claim at the court and it's at this stage that the bank normally acts and they will get their money back."

Iva.co.uk conducted a study that found 99 per cent of people believed bank charges to be unfair while 95 per cent have had to pay bank charges within the past year.
