Ethical Isas could become 'popular'

Ethical Isas could be set to become a more attractive proposition among consumers, according to a trade body for the asset management industry.

Helen Stephenson, a spokesperson for the Investment Management Association (IMA), says that with the socially responsible investments having "few real disadvantages", more consumers were set to take them on.

The potential disadvantage of ethical investments was that because they were more likely to invest in smaller companies, their performance could be affected.

Ms Stephenson said that while ethical Isas were currently a "very niche" part of the market, comprising one per cent of the total management fund, with environmental awareness displaying consistent growth, it was quite possible the market could grow.

"At the moment there's such a small amount of money going into these funds there doesn't appear to be a huge appetite for them – but that's not to say it won't grow," she said.
