Choose eco-friendly financial packages 'with care'

Consumers need to assess the details of various eco-friendly financial packages to ensure that they are receiving the most competitive of deals.

Stephen Hine, head of international relations at the Ethical Investment Research Service, says that consumers need to make sure they are picking a bona fide package which is not simply available to cash in on the social trend of people displaying a so-called eco-conscience.

"All consumers should look closely at the details of any particular purchase on offer and the extent to which they feel it would make a difference to what they would otherwise be doing," he said.

Mr Hine said that those people looking to invest in a green fund needed to assess the criteria of the package and also potentially seek help from a financial adviser.

Exercising due caution was a necessity, Mr Hine said, suggesting that people needed to ask themselves: "Will there be a return going to the environmental cause … or will it make more sense to do it directly?"
