Halifax asks for empty home action

Responding to the large number of homes that stand empty in the UK, Halifax has called for more action on the issue.

Halifax research reveals that 64 per cent of survey respondents think the government should do more to address these empty homes, which may reduce local property values and repel potential buyers.

Jaedon Green, head of mortgage sales at Halifax, said that it was "great" to see that the public backed the bank's efforts to crack down on empty houses.

"Halifax calls on the government to extend existing VAT and council tax discounts to encourage the renovation of empty houses, thus making them homes," he added.

The bank has asked that the reduced five per cent rate of VAT for restoring an empty home be extended to properties vacant for more than six months.

A previous Halifax study found that one in four Britons is affected by vacant, unused properties.
