West Bromwich Building Society ISA tops the class

A West Bromwich Building Society ISA was the best Mini Cash ISA performer last year.

Investors wishing to take advantage of the two-year fixed rate fund this year will be disappointed though, it was only available to existing customers and is now closed to new investors.

Overall the average return for a Mini Cash ISA has risen compared with last year's figures.

The Moneyfacts survey found that it increased from £3,111.73 to £3,137.61.

This is based on a maximum investment of £3,000 made on accounts opened on April 6th 2004, where no withdrawals have taken place.

Mutuals have done particularly well over the last year, taking up fourteen of the top twenty places.

Abbey held the top spot for the top performing variable rate ISA, with a return of £3,155.27.

Abbey also came first in the best high street bank and best CAT standard ISA categories.

Northern Rock's instant access ISA occupies last place for the second year running giving a return of just £3,107.09.
