An expert from The Student Room has urged people to look at the overdraft flexibility and customer support available on financial products when making a decision about which to opt for.

Jamie O'Connell described how many of the perks that come with propositions can be useful, but they are not the most vital thing to watch out for.

He said: "You want to choose an account that gives you the best customer support and overdraft flexibility, as in the medium to long term these will be more important to you than gimmicks."

Mr O'Connell advised students to look for a part-time job early on in their course, before everyone else has the same idea.

In his view, it can help people manage their money if they draw up a spreadsheet of where money needs to be spent each week.

Last week, universities minister David Willetts suggested individuals should pay more to attend university.
