Confused.com: Energy tariffs should reward efficiency

Many current energy tariffs do not reward people for being responsible and this is a negative strategy, Confused.com energy has suggested.

Gareth Kloet, head of energy at the website, claimed it is "unacceptable" for providers not to structure their contracts in a way that penalises higher end consumption.

He stated: "In terms of standing charges, customers are charged the same for sitting in a house with just candlelight for heat and light, as customers who leave the house with all the lights blazing."

Mr Kloet made his comments in response to proposals by the new coalition government in the UK to increase households' control of their energy costs by offering more information about cheaper deals.

The Confused.com energy spokesperson recently highlighted how smaller energy providers are often the first to pass on savings to their customers if wholesale prices drop, but they are also the first to increase prices when wholesale costs rise.
