Legal & General banking welcomes stewardship code

Mark Burgess, head of equities at the firm's Investment Management arm, noted that the company has previously called for action regarding issues such as collective engagement.
As a result, it is happy to see the stewardship code introduced and Mr Burgess claimed that the Legal & General banking organisation already incorporates many of the practices in its procedures.
"The next step in the process of creating better engagement has to be for the market to evolve the commercial aspects of this activity," he added.
Mr Burgess highlighted the investment that the firm has devoted to bettering Legal & General's engagement work and stressed that this should not be used to support "free riders" in the industry.
Last week, the firm announced that it is looking forward to cooperating with the government to help deliver an improved welfare system in the UK.
