Staying in touch could cost travellers

OneCompare.com has found that by making and even receiving calls whilst abroad, gap year travellers could end up with phone bills that they simply cannot afford.

In some countries receiving a call can cost as much as £1.65 a minute, while in the popular gap year destination India making a call costs over £1.50 a minute.

However, compounding the problem is the fact that many networks, especially the big four across the UK, ‘lock’ people in, a practice which prevents travellers from using local SIM cards.

Phones can be unlocked for a small fee and this will allow those on a gap year to buy local SIM cards, making it free to receive calls from home.

However, for calling home, it is often cheapest to purchase a call card that allows you to make cheap international calls from payphones.
