Customers should fix now, says moneysupermarket.com energy

Price comparison service moneysupermarket.com energy has urged people to fix on a utilities deal, as there may be a storm brewing in the sector.

Scott Byrom, utilities manager at the firm, made his remarks after changes were made to fixed tariffs from British Gas.

He noted that customers have until October 1st 2010 to decide whether they want to opt for the company's Price Promise 2011 or Price Promise 2012, since they will be charged a £35 termination fee if they try to change after that date.

Mr Byrom suggested that people who are coming to the end of a fixed-rate deal may wish to keep their eye on their upcoming tariff, while others should perhaps think about fixing.

"With wholesale energy prices hitting a year-high last week we fully expect to see more of the best deals for new customers being pulled and ... prices for existing customers to creep up," he added.

This week, moneysupermarket.com energy revealed that three of the top six providers have recently withdrawn their cheapest deals.
