Football fans counting the cost of support

Fans of lower league football in England have been found to spend more than £1,000 a season supporting their beloved teams, according to new research.

The Backyourclub website, which conducted the survey, is run by Norwich and Peterborough Building Society which has teamed up with the Football Association in order to offer savings accounts at 20 Football League clubs.

At a Premiership match, 44 per cent of the away fans have been found to spend over £60 on a range of items such as the match day ticket, a programme, pies and pints but it is not just supporting a club in the English top flight that requires such an outlay.

Therefore, a suitable savings account such as the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society Club Savers Account could be the answer for football fans.

Alison Rolls, spokesperson for Backyourclub, said: "Premiership football fans regularly pay large amounts of money to watch the multimillionaire players on show at Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and Anfield."

"However, as our research highlights, it can be just as expensive for the grass roots football fan to follow their local side," she added.

The fans of football teams plying their trade in the Conference were found to be no different than those of football league teams, as over half of those surveyed said they attended over 20 home games a season, highlighting the need for fans to be frugal with their money.

Some of the clubs offering the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society Club Savers Account are Hull City, Norwich City, Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers.
