Going out a 'no-no' on New Year's Eve

The majority of people would rather save their money and relax at home in front of the TV or with loved ones on New Year's Eve, according to research by Yorkshire Bank.

Rather than face the prospect of gigantic queues for the bar at pubs and clubs, 53 per cent are set to welcome 2007 in from the comfort of their own homes, either by watching TV or entertaining friends and family.

It was found that only five per cent of people in the UK have plans to spend over £200 on seeing in the new year and one in four said that the cost of the night put them off going out.

Gary Lumby, Yorkshire Bank's head of retail, stated: "We normally associate New Year's Eve with outrageous parties and excessive spending.

"Our research suggests this is no longer the case. Scenes reminiscent of EastEnders and Pat Butcher's front room with a few close friends gathered around her cocktail bar are more likely than being crammed into the Queen Vic or Scarlet's Bar in Albert Square."

The money saved from hitting the town on New Year's Eve could go into a Yorkshire Bank Regular Saver account that requires a minimum investment of £10 per month.
