Financial worries and arguments currently account for over two million break ups in the UK, says the online credit report monitoring service by Experian.

One in four couples argue over finances and one in 20 find themselves splitting up over differences in opinion relating to the household's financial situation.

Experian's Personal Credit Index also discovered that nine per cent of Brits are untruthful when it comes to finances and hide statements from their partner.

Jim Hodgkins, managing director of CreditExpert, said: "The index underlines just how many couples in Britain argue and, in some cases split up, over their finances.

"It's hardly surprising that 18 to 34 year olds - those most likely to be first-time buyers in the property market - feel the pinch and argue the most. What is sad is the number of children affected."

Mr Hodgkins recommended that individuals consult an online credit report monitoring service such as CreditExpert when checking their financial situation.

Further, a divide between the north and south of the UK has emerged with a decrease in consumer confidence arising in London and the south.
