Shopping around for financial products 'could save over £3,000'

Shopping around for a financial product could still save borrowers thousands of pounds, Moneyextra has claimed, despite a contraction in the market.

It has found that the total annual savings available by replacing the near-worst with the near-best products now stands at £3,363.84, which is £1,231.02 less than the savings a person could make in the first quarter of 2008.

The company blames the "near-doubling" in the arrangement fees being charged by some mortgages for the shortfall.

In addition, potential savings on credit cards are being diminished by increased competition between providers, it states.

"We're no longer being bombarded by blizzards of mailshots - card issuers are fighting each other for profitable customers who won't default on their debt," Robin Amlot of Moneyextra.com commented.

Moneysupermarket.com recently suggested that savers could be missing out by not moving their money around in different accounts.
