Alliance Trust explains how to invest property in an SIPP

A how-to factsheet and webcast have been published by Alliance Trust to advise on using property investment for a self-invested personal pension (SIPP).

The information covers such detail as when a mortgage is needed and the process involved.

Steve Latto, pensions development manager, said advisers needed to consider the property, its occupants and likely rental income because "property valuations can fluctuate and this can be an illiquid investment".

He said investing commercial property in a SIPP could be attractive due to various tax breaks, but that these needed to be weighed against the potential cost and little liquidity.

The bulletin and webcast are designed to "give advisers a clear starting point" when considering using property investment for an SIPP.

Interest in SIPPs is growing, and some professionals believe that the personal pensions market is going to become increasingly popular, the Financial Times reported this month.

One of the reasons for this, according to the paper, is that individuals can choose which assets are bought, leased or sold, and when they are acquired or discarded.
