Money-spinning home tips offered

Suggestions on how to make money from a home have been put forward by the Sunday Times.

The newspaper suggested renting out rooms that are no longer being used, house swapping during holidays and charging for use of a parking place, garage or swimming pool.

Homeowners can also turn basements into flats to rent, or dig them if the property does not have one already.

But Michael Holmes, editor-in-chief of Move or Improve magazine, told the paper this would work only in "high density areas", ruling out places such as Lincolnshire.

Homeowners can also rent out rooms if they live close to a festival or other major event, or take advantage of picturesque surroundings to start a tea room.

They can also install renewable energy devices to cut fuel costs and sell power back to the grid.

Green Building magazine has reported the benefits of sheep's wool as an insulator.

It says it is ten per cent more efficient than glass fibre and could reduce energy costs.
