Britons getting more for less in communication

Britons are spending more time using communication services while paying less for them, a report by Ofcom has found.

The market regulator found that in 2007, UK consumers spent an average of seven hours and nine minutes a day using communication media such as the internet, television, phones and radio.

While it was a six minute increase from 2006, the average household cost of £93.63 a month was £1.53 less.

In contrast, food prices went up by almost seven per cent and the retail price index rose to 4.1 per cent in the same period, Ofcom said.

The watchdog says the improved customer deals are due to discount arrangements in which people pay one fee for several services, switching providers to find the best deal and lower broadband costs.

Despite this, micro-blogging website Twitter has pulled its mobile phone service in the UK, saying it is too expensive.

TechRadar UK reports co-founder Biz Stone as saying it would no longer support British mobiles unless it could strike a cheaper deal with mobile phone operators.
