Telegraph tells how to cut water bills

Ways to cut water bills and reduce water wastage have been given by the Telegraph newspaper.

According to the newspaper, water companies intend to increase bills by up to 60 per cent in the next five years, which would see the average water bill rise from £300 to almost £500.

One suggestion was installing a water meter.

Most British households can have a meter installed for free and can switch back within 12 months if they do not find they are saving money.

Taps should not be left running; fruit and vegetables can be soaked in a bowl while water can be kept in the fridge rather than running a tap until it goes cold.

In addition, a "hippo", or polyethylene block, in the toilet cistern can cut water use by three litres per flush, while leaking taps should be fixed.

A five-minute shower uses a third of the water as a bath and more water efficient appliances are now available.

New spending plans by water companies recently showed that millions could face rises of over 20 per cent in their water bills.
