Brits 'are haggling over cars and televisions'

UK consumers are increasingly bartering over the prices of cars and televisions as the credit crunch hits, according to new research.

CreditExpert, an online credit report access service that is part of information provider Experian, found that more than half of those polled (57 per cent) said they were more likely to try to secure a discount now than a year ago.

Almost half of people (47 per cent) would attempt to negotiate a price from a retailer.

But only 16 per cent would try to haggle over a loan or financial product.

The research also found that men are the best hagglers, saving an average of £343 each on a single product compared to women's £217.

Jim Hodgkins, managing director of CreditExpert.co.uk said that as many people do not understand financial products as well as they do consumer goods, they "lack the confidence and know-how" to secure a better deal.

Last month, a guide by the BBC on how to haggle suggested shopping at a quiet time, researching the offers available, being friendly and trying for extras such as an extended warranty.
