Inflation falls for November

Statistics released today reveal that price inflation fell to 4.1 per cent last month, down from 4.5 per cent in October.

According to Office of National statistics the average price of petrol fell by 9.3 pence per litre over the period, leading to cheaper transport costs and contributing to a price inflation slowdown across the board.

Household utilities have also risen less than last year recently but the prices of fruit and vegetables rose by 10.8 per cent and 13.9 per cent respectively, which could be bad news for those stocking up on groceries for Christmas.

The Liberal Democrats treasury spokesman Vince Cable said: "There is an air of unreality about these numbers, since most analysts and businesses are seeing evidence of falling prices."

Earlier this week a survey by Halifax Credit Cards revealed that the prices of many popular present items, like clothes, toys and CDs had fallen.
